But first, let’s take a look at Annie’s story, A Touch of Gold (which is a King Mida retelling)

King Midas once had the ability to turn all he touched into gold. But after his gift—or curse—almost killed his daughter, Midas relinquished The Touch forever. Ten years later, Princess Kora still bears the consequences of her father’s wish: her skin shines golden, rumors follow her everywhere she goes, and she harbors secret powers that are getting harder to hide.

Kora spends her days locked in the palace, concealed behind gloves and veils, trying to ignore the stares and gossip of courtiers. It isn’t until a charming young duke arrives that Kora realizes there may be someone out there who doesn’t fear her or her curse. But their courtship is disrupted when a thief steals precious items from the kingdom, leaving the treasury depleted and King Midas vulnerable. Thanks to her unique ability to sense gold, Kora is the only one who can track the thief down. As she sails off on her quest, Kora learns that not everything is what it seems—not thieves, not pirates, and not even curses. She quickly discovers that gold—and the power it brings—is more dangerous than she’d ever believed.

Midas learned his lesson at a price. What will Kora’s journey cost?

From author Annie Sullivan comes A Touch of Gold, the untold story of the daughter King Midas turned to gold, perfect for fans of Cinder and The Wrath and the Dawn.

About Annie Sullivan:

Annie Sullivan grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and received her master’s degree in Creative Writing from Butler University. She loves fairytales, everything Jane Austen, and traveling. Her wanderlust has taken her to every continent, where she’s walked on the Great Wall of China, found four-leaf clovers in Ireland, waddled with penguins in Antarctica, and cage dived with great white sharks in South Africa. You can follow her adventures on Twitter and Instagram (@annsulliva).

She’s also been on my shows like TWENTY FOUR times or so…okay, not quite that many, but a ton. (Hint, remember that number)

Annie kindly sent over a playlist to go with her incredible story and I’m so excited to be able to share it with you today! Check this out:

A Touch of Gold Music Playlist

A Touch of Gold follows Kora, the seventeen-year-old cursed daughter of King Midas, as she faces pirates, betrayers, and thieves on her quest to retrieve her father’s stolen gold. It’s a high seas adventure full of sweeping landscapes and daring exploits. As such, it needs an epic playlist to go along with it.

Below are some of the songs that pair great with reading A Touch of Gold.

1.) Gold by Britt Nicole

Reason: This would totally be the main theme. This song sums up Princess Kora perfectly. She’s cursed with golden skin and doesn’t have a lot of confidence. Yet, through the novel she begins to learn to love herself just as she is—realizing she really is worth more than gold.

2.) I’m Still Here by Johnny Rzeznik

Reason: The song starts out with the lyrics “I am a question to the world,” and that sums up Kora and her golden skin so well. This song is all about wanting to feel like you belong, and for a girl with golden skin, that’s what she wants most. It’s also about how the world views us versus how we view ourselves. It ends with the words “I’m still here,” which speaks to Kora still being herself, even in her golden skin.

3.) How Far I’ll Go the Distance – Moana/Hercules EPIC A Cappella Mashup

Reason: Kora has to set out early on in the novel to retrieve her father’s cursed gold when it gets stolen. This mashup of Disney songs has a great vibe for a sea adventure. It also plays into the themes of having to set out to find your place in the world.

4.) Pirates Montage from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack

Reason: Pirates play a key role in A Touch of Gold, and nothing makes me think of pirates more than the thrumming beats of the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack.

5.) Brave by Sara Bareilles

Reason: This song is all about being brave and being yourself, which really speak to Kora’s character. She has to face mythical creatures and dangers she never even imagined on her quest, which she can only do by being brave.

6.) Always Know Where You Are by Johnny Rzeznik

Reason: This song speaks a lot to Kora and her relationship with her father by the end of the book. It shows that broken relationships can be repaired. It also ironically relates to Kora’s connection with her father’s cursed gold, so it’s a great song to represent her relationship with her father.

7.) This Is Me from The Greatest Showman soundtrack

Reason: By the end of the novel, Kora is much more accepting of her golden skin. Others still may fear her or turn away, but she knows who she is. She knows her own worth and her own strength. She’s not afraid to step into the spotlight anymore.
