Three Thoughts From A New Author

The shift in my world is kind of awesome. I’ve gone from being an outsider, to an educator, to an author. I studied the industry, then I taught the industry, and now I’m one of the authors in the industry.

I feel like I’m being swept up in the whirlwind of pages, much like my fine arts image here. I created this years ago when I was first starting my author journey, and now I’m here, right in the middle of it.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

1.) Don’t take the first book deal you get offered before making sure it’s the right fit. It took me a long time to find the right fit. I’m glad I turned deals down and waited for this one.

2.) Embrace social media. I teach social media for a living, I know it’s value. I jumped right into social media the second I was announced and it’s made all the difference.

3.) Let your friends support you. For a long time I hid the fact that I was writing. I wish I hadn’t because the people in my life were such a strong source of support once I let them in. Lean on the people around you-they want to be there for you. If you don’t have friends like that, make new friends. it’s okay to have more than one set of friends.

Are you an aspiring writer? Let’s hang out! Are you already an author? Come learn with me at Reading Transforms.

Stay inspired,

-K.M.
